With wind and solar energy providing a growing share of the West’s electricity, the role of hydroelectric plants may be changing and Ascend Analytics President Gary Dorris will be talking about how energy professionals can better fit hydro power into their portfolios at a[DAL1] Electric Utility Consultants Inc. conference in December.
Held in Sacramento, Dec. 12-13, the EUCI conference, “Hydropower’s Evolving Role in Western Power Grid Reliability,” will feature talks on policy and financial issues tied to hydroelectric plants. Dr. Dorris will speak on “Hydropower and the Thermal Fleet: Partners or Peril.” Issues Dr. Dorris will cover include the value of hydroelectric power for renewable portfolio standards, the effect of retiring coal generators in the West and how hydro fits as ancillary energy in a region with growing supplies of wind and solar energy.
Dr. Dorris co-founded Ascend Analytics in Boulder, Colo., providing data analysis infrastructure to the power industry. Products including PowerSimm and CurveDeveloper help integrate utilities, merchant generators and retailers manage energy portfolios to minimize risk. He holds a PhD from Cornell University and has served as an expert witness in energy industry litigation.
